Time Lapse Illuminations: Performance-Demomonstration

60 minutes
Personnel: Choreographer/Artistic Director Jody Sperling + 2 Dancers

In this unique program, Jody Sperling and two dancers from her Time Lapse Dance ensemble share a taste of the company’s signature theatrical magic while revealing the process underlying its creation. Sperling is known for furthering the style of modern dance “mother” and performance technologist Loïe Fuller into contemporary and environmental contexts. For over a decade, Sperling’s work has specifically focused on using the Fuller “apparatus” to express the human body’s relationship to nature and to grapple with our changing world. The company’s repertory touches upon climate change-themes such as melting ice, shifting atmospheric patterns, proliferating plastics, and rising seas. In this program, Sperling and dancers share solo and duet selections from repertory works including: Arbor, expressing human kinship with trees; Sea Change, reimagining our relationship with water; and Piece for a Northern Sky, a meditation on planetary motion. Sperling shares the vocabulary used to construct such works giving the audience a glimpse into the dance-making process. The program concludes with a conversation with the artists.
