"In a solo version of 'Washed Up,' Sperling becomes the fairy-tale mermaid who loved a human, revealing dreamy, marine yearnings and then the painful reality (wonderfully imagined) of walking." –Deborah Jowit, The Village Voice
Sperling's version of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid uses an idiosyncratic lyricism to conjure up a mythic aquatic realm. Fluid acrobatics and preening gestures meld to suggest archetypal images of femininity. Quentin Chiappetta's score mixes liquidy sounds with gamelan, cello, voice, and other instrumentations to create a lush underwater landscape. (10 minutes)
