The company revives Sperling's trio A Leg Up which, in the spirit of vintage Variety, riffs on the exuberant antics of acrobats and contortionists captured in early motion pictures.

Part of a two-week festival, the program is hosted by Victoria Libertore and includes artists Pooh Kaye, Naoko Maeshiba & Mikroknytes (Baltimore), Christine Suarez (Los Angeles) and Sarah Williams (Montreal).

“Dancing with Loie” Festival
Maryhill Museum of Art

Saturday, June 21, 2008, from 9am-10pm

Performance at 7pm

Day-long celebration of Loie Fuller includes lectures by Sperling, as well as authors Ann Cooper Albright and Rhonda Garelick, among others.

Festival culminates with Time Lapse Dance performance offering a special preview of Ghosts, a new work-in-progress. Playing with illusions of physical appearance and disappearance, this trio moves Fuller’s vocabulary of billowing undulations into an experimental context with an original score, by Quentin Chiappetta. Performance also includes revivals of Sperling’s critically-acclaimed Dance of the Elements and La Nuit.

Jody Sperling reprises her critically-acclaimed Dance of the Elements, a tribute to Loie Fuller. In this five-part suite, Sperling furls her enormous winged costume of more than 80 yards of white silk into eddying spiral shapes, evoking the elements Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Ether. Robert Johnson of Newark Star Ledger calls the dance "lovely and captivating." Sperling appears on a program featuring Isadora Duncan's first masterpiece, Iphigenia (1905), performed in a revival staged by Julia Levien and performed by Jodi Liss. A rare opportunity to see the artistry of two of the mothers of modern dance side by side.

Jody Sperling/Time Lapse Dance presents four performances, including the world premiere of Roman Sketches. This spectacular synthesis of lighting, music, motion and visual design re-imagines the artistry of modern-dance pioneer Loie Fuller. In the spirit of vintage Variety performance, the program also offers the world premiere of More Cheap Tricks. This trio riffs on the exuberant antics of acrobats and contortionists captured in early motion pictures. With shamelessly bendy moves and implausibly inter-locking partnering, this epilogue to Sperling's 'Inexpensive Trilogy' is sure to amuse young and old. With dancers Emily Lutin, Andrea Skurr and Chrisselle Tidrick. Sperling rounds out the program with two solos: the virtuosic Hoop Act, in which she whirls first one, then two, then three hoops aloft; and the enchanting La Nuit in which her glittering gown evokes a swatch of starlit sky.
